The 4th stage of the Giro d'Italia produces a new leader.
The local Giulio Ciccone takes the Maglia Rosa, which Jan Christen also had in his sights. The stage between Catanzaro and Cosenza is won by Jhonatan Narvaez.
Jan Christen launched an attack one and a half kilometers before the finish and could dream of a double coup for a while: stage win and maglia rosa. The young rider from Aargau, who was the virtual overall leader with three rivals in the final phase of the stage, rode ahead of the field for a good kilometer before he was caught and was able to watch as one of his colleagues from the UAE Emirates team, the Ecuadorian Jhonatan Narvaez, won the long final sprint.
The lead in the overall standings went to 31-year-old Giulio Ciccone, who finished third behind the Venezuelan Orluis Aular and was able to distance himself from Jan Christen by four seconds thanks to the bonuses. The German Florian Stork from the Swiss Team Tudor and the Colombian Egan Bernal are on the same time as Christen.
The previous leader Guillermo Silva played no part in the first stage on Italian soil after the start in Bulgaria. Like the best sprinters, the Uruguayan lost the connection to the peloton on the Cozzo Tunno, a category 2 climb a good 40 kilometers before the finish. He finished the 138 kilometers in Calabria a good 12 minutes behind the field.
