George Russell celebrates his first win of the season at the Austrian Grand Prix. The Briton in the Mercedes benefits from a collision between the leading duo Max Verstappen/Lando Norris in the closing stages.
While Verstappen in the Red Bull finished fifth despite the incident and a ten-second penalty, Norris, who finished second in the championship, retired. Although the Briton made it back to the pits with a shredded tire like his rival, the damage to the McLaren was too extensive for him to continue. Norris and the Dutchman collided because Verstappen left the line under braking.
For 26-year-old Russell, it was his second Grand Prix victory after the one in Brazil in mid-November 2022. Second place in Spielberg went to Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren), with Spaniard Carlos Sainz in a Ferrari in third.
The Sauber team drivers also failed to score a result in the eleventh Grand Prix of the season. The Finn Valtteri Bottas finished 16th and the Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu was 17th.
