A unique new sport is celebrating its Olympic premiere in Paris this summer: breakdancing. And with a big performance on the Place de la Concorde.

A total of 329 sets of medals will be awarded at the Summer Games, in 32 sports. 28 are part of the so-called Olympic core programme, four are proposed by the local organizing committee. Three that were on the program for the first time in Tokyo are back again this time: skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.
Breakdancing is a new addition. It is the first dance sport on the Olympic stage. 16 athletes, B-boys and B-girls, will first compete in a round robin, then in quarter and semi-finals as well as the medal rounds in a direct duel against one opponent. Nine judges assess six criteria: creativity, personality, technique, variety, execution and musicality. Special feature: the competitors do not know in advance what music they are to dance to, they have to improvise.
30,000 fans expected
Breakdancing gets a big stage in Paris. On the centrally located Place de la Concorde, where skateboarders, BMX freestyle cyclists and street basketball players also show off their skills, grandstands have been set up for 30,000 spectators.
There are a few changes in other sports. In sport climbing, medals will now be contested in two categories, speed and combination, which now only consists of lead and bouldering. This suits the only Swiss participant, Sascha Lehmann.
New disciplines in and on the water
Canoeists will have two new opportunities in the slalom. Alena Marx from Bern and above all Martin Dougoud from Geneva are among the medal contenders in the kayak single and cross.
Within the sailing competitions off Marseille, kitesurfing will be included in the Olympic program for the first time, with Elena Lengwiler from Eastern Switzerland, who learned her sport on Lake Walen.
Finally, men are also eligible to compete in synchronized swimming for the first time.
