The sailing yacht of defending champion Team New Zealand at the 37th America's Cup is damaged in an accident.
When the "Taihoro" was lifted out of the water on Thursday, the first day of the qualifying round, the crane failed and the yacht fell six meters onto the bearing block. It sounded "like a bomb going off", said team boss Grant Dalton. No one was injured.
Due to the damage, the New Zealanders will not be able to sail in the preliminaries until further notice. However, as defending champions, they are seeded for the final competition for the most coveted sailing trophy anyway. The Swiss team Alinghi Red Bull is one of the five challengers.
