Denmark wins 37:29 against France in the opening game of the Olympic handball tournament, taking revenge for their defeat in the European Championship final.
The men's handball tournament kicked off on Saturday evening with a prestigious duel, a rematch of the 2021 Olympic final. Six-time world champions France and three-time world champions Denmark had already faced each other in the European Championship final in Cologne at the end of January. With the better end for the French, who secured their fourth title at continental level in Germany.
The two heavyweights go into the Olympic tournament with the ambition of competing for the medals. And this endeavor got off to a more successful start for the Scandinavians, who could win gold in Paris for the second time since 2016.
After an even first half, in which the French were able to build up a five-goal cushion at times, the Danes took control of the game for the most part in the second half. Led by Mathias Gidsel and Simon Pytlick, who scored eleven goals each, the team of national coach Nikolaj Jacobsen finally secured a comfortable victory. France, who are dreaming of a fourth Olympic gold medal at home after 2008, 2012 and 2021, will have to do better.
