Gregor Deschwanden finishes 17th in the first of two World Cup ski jumping events in Sapporo. The Swiss have to compete with borrowed equipment.
Deschwanden borrowed jumping skis from the American Kevin Bickner, who is roughly the same height and weight. Deschwanden beat Bickner (18th) by 2.7 points with his equipment. The Swiss had to make do with other people's equipment because their skis had not yet made it to the Japanese winter sports resort after delays on the journey from Lake Placid to Sapporo.
With jumps of 131 and 124.5 m, Deschwanden missed out on a 19th top 10 finish this season by 10.7 points. On the other hand, he has already jumped less well this season with his own equipment in Lake Placid (21st) and Willingen (20th) than in Sapporo with Bickner's equipment. Killian Peier (35th) failed to qualify for the second round.
Victory in the home event went to 28-year-old Ryoyu Kobayashi, who has disappointed so far this season and has never finished higher than 5th place. Kobayashi gained a lead of 19.7 points with his jumps of 137 and 136.5 meters. Kobayashi's last victory came on March 12, 2024 in Trondheim.
