Yves Mermod and Maja Siegenthaler got off to a good start in the 470 medal race and sailed to the first turning mark on the left-hand side of the course. The tactic paid off and the Swiss boat was in third place at one point. At the second cross, however, Mermod/Siegenthaler opted for the right-hand side of the course, which has often been the right choice in recent days.

"Unfortunately not this time. We stayed on the outside right and were passed to the back," Maja Siegenthaler said later. "We made a lot of the right decisions during the regatta, this one was wrong. Nevertheless, we can look back on a great week and enjoyed the days here in Marseille."

With 8th place in the medal race, Yves Mermod and Maja Siegenthaler dropped back to 8th place, but secured the diploma they were aiming for. "We are very happy with our performance," said Yves Mermod about his Olympic debut. "I'm proud of how we approached the regatta and how we managed to keep our focus at all times. The fact that we sailed to a diploma together is all the better."

Also a diploma for kitesurfer Elena Lengwiler

Elena Lengwiler surfed to 6th place in the first Olympic kite class in a difficult qualification with only six instead of the planned 16 races. In the Medal Series, she therefore had to beat the American Daniela Moroz, who was ahead of her, in her semi-final in order to reach the final.

After a good start, the 28-year-old from St. Gallen was ahead, but then fell off the foil and into the water during a turn. With an impressive race to catch up, she actually managed to catch Moroz in a photo finish - however, she received a penalty point for a contact and still had to concede victory in her semi-final to the American.

"It was a great day with really good conditions at last," said a delighted Elena Lengwiler. "I was happy to have another good race. Unfortunately, I crashed at a turn and went down. Nevertheless, I am very happy to have been here in Marseille. It was a fantastic experience." Lengwiler finished in 6th place in the final standings and secured himself an Olympic diploma.
