Swiss professional golfer Joel Girrbach shone on Thursday and Friday at the World Tour tournament in St. Andrews, Scotland, but completely collapsed on Sunday.
On Friday afternoon, the 32-year-old from Thurgau even had the chance to take the lead with a putt. With 11 strokes under par, Girrbach finished in the top 10 after two rounds.
However, the tournament in St. Andrews is different to most major golf events. Three courses with a huge tradition have to be played over three days. It was not possible to play at all on Saturday due to the bad weather. And on Sunday, Girrbach lost his great starting position on the third course. He needed 6 strokes more than the course standard for the final round and dropped out of the top 10 to 71st place. Girrbach dropped out of the prize money and out of the points.
Girrbach desperately needed the points. He dropped back to 109th place in the annual ranking. Only the top 110 are guaranteed a Tour card for 2026. Girrbach still has three tournaments left in the next three weeks - in Madrid, New Delhi and Cheonan - to secure his Tour card again.
