The Edmonton Oilers and the Carolina Hurricanes still need a win to advance to the semi-finals of the NHL playoffs.
Last year's Stanley Cup finalists Edmonton beat the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 to take a 3-1 lead in the best-of-7 quarter-final series. The home team's match-winner was Adam Henrique, who scored twice in the first period. The result was already clear after 28 minutes. Connor McDavid was credited with his 14th assist in the current playoffs when Evander Kane made it 3-0. Edmonton goalkeeper Stuart Skinner saved 23 shots. Akira Schmid was once again the backup goalie for the visitors.
Carolina also led 3-1 after a 5-2 home win against the Washington Capitals. Five different players were responsible for the hosts' goals. The last goal into the empty net was scored by Russia's Andrey Svechnikov, who scored for the seventh time in the decisive championship phase. The Hurricanes, who had eliminated the New Jersey Devils with the Swiss trio of Nico Hischier, Timo Meier and Jonas Siegenthaler in the first round, thus also won their fifth home game in these playoffs. Washington finished the qualifiers as the second-best team behind the Winnipeg Jets.
