Simon Ehammer got off to a good start in the heptathlon at the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn. Nevertheless, he is not in the lead after half-time.
Especially in the shot put, which is not one of his favorite disciplines, the Appenzell native scored more points than budgeted with 15.15 m. In addition to his exploit with the shot put, he had already shown a great distance of 8.20 m in his specialty discipline, the long jump. Thanks to these two performances, the mediocre 6.81 seconds over 60 m and the 1.98 m in the high jump were compensated for.
With a half-time total of 3647 points, Ehammer is on course for the Swiss record (6418). But a record does not necessarily mean victory. The man from Appenzell is in a close duel with Sander Skotheim. The Norwegian raised the European record to 6484 points in January and almost overtook Ehammer a year ago in Glasgow in the battle for World Indoor Championship gold in the 1000 m race.
The Norwegian finished the first day with an outstanding 2.19 m in the high jump and overtook the Swiss with 3689 points. Ehammer wants gold and the European record in Apeldoorn. This will be a very difficult undertaking. Ehammer is the better hurdler, but Skotheim has advantages in the pole vault and the 1000 m run.
