A heavy blow for the New Jersey Devils: The team with the Swiss trio of captain Nico Hischier, Timo Meier and Jonas Siegenthaler will have to do without top scorer Jack Hughes for the final stretch of the season.

Jack Hughes had to undergo surgery on his right shoulder on Wednesday. According to his team's announcement, the center should be fit again by the start of next season.

Jack Hughes, the most productive player in the New Jersey Devils' ranks in the current championship with 70 scoring points, was injured last Sunday in Las Vegas when he collided with the boards. The 23-year-old American had already undergone surgery on his shoulder in April of last year.

The loss of their top scorer comes at the worst possible time for the Devils. The franchise from Newark is in the thick of the battle for a play-off place and has been going through a difficult phase since the turn of the year, with 9 wins from 23 games.
