Elena Quirici was aiming for her fourth European Championship title in kumite karate in Armenia's capital after winning in 2016, 2018 and 2023. However, the athlete from Aargau lost sight of this goal early on.
She lost to the young German Hannah Riedel, who ultimately won gold, in the semi-final (also) due to controversial decisions by the judges - and then gave free rein to her incomprehension and disappointment on Instagram.
