Luger Natalie Maag caused a positive surprise at the European Championships in Oberhof. The luger from the Zurich Oberland region won the European Championship bronze medal at the World Cup, which was held in parallel.
On her home track in Oberhof, where she has her temporary home during the season, Maag lost just 28 hundredths to the German European champion Merle Fräbel. The Swiss athlete was just two thousandths short of silver, which went to Austria's Lisa Schulte.
With her second medal win at a major event, the 2024 World Championship silver medallist in the sprint confirmed that she is in good shape ahead of the Olympic competitions in Cortina d'Ampezzo in three weeks' time. After a strong final spurt last season with two podium finishes and 5th place in the overall World Cup and at the World Championships in Whistler, Maag started the Olympic season with great ambitions.
So far, however, the hoped-for results have failed to materialize. In the first five World Cup races, she finished 7th, 7th, 11th, 15th and 8th.
