The New Jersey Devils lose in the NHL against the Washington Capitals 5:6 after overtime. Even three goals each from Nico Hischier and Timo Meier could not avert the defeat.
By the first intermission, the Devils were trailing 1:3 after Washington's captain and superstar Alexander Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season. But less than a minute after the restart in the second period, Hischier had evened the score. The Devils' captain from Valais scored twice within ten seconds. On his second strike, he put the Capitals' defense under pressure in forechecking together with teammate Timo Meier and then converted his compatriot's assist in cold blood.
Meier also shone as the provider of New Jersey's fourth (together with Hischier) and fifth goals, enabling the Devils to stage a second comeback after they had fallen behind 3:5 again.
In overtime, however, Tom Wilson put the final nail in the coffin for New Jersey, who remain leaders of the Eastern Conference despite their third defeat of the season. Although Jonas Siegenthaler did not score for the Devils, he was on the ice longer than any other member of his team, playing a good 26 minutes.
No scoring points for Suter and Kurashev
The Vancouver Canucks, meanwhile, are slowly getting back on track after three defeats at the start of the season and managed their second win in a row with a 3-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers. Pius Suter remained scoreless for the Canucks.
The same goes for Philipp Kurashev, who was unable to prevent the Chicago Blackhawks from losing 4-2 to the Buffalo Sabres.
Roman Josi and the Nashville Predators (2:5 against Detroit) and Janis Moser and the Tampa Bay Lightning (4:5 against Ottawa) also had to leave the ice as losers on Saturday evening. While the team from Florida suffered its first defeat in the fourth game, the Predators, who started the game with high ambitions, are the only team in the league still without points after five games.
