Evenepoel fully lived up to his role as favorite in the time trial from Charmes-sur-Rhône to Saint-Péray. In the 17.4 km long section, which had a significant climb in the middle section, he distanced the Dane Jonas Vingegaard by 21 seconds and the American Matteo Jorgenson by 38 seconds. It was the 1000th victory for the Belgian team Soudal Quick-Step since it was founded in 2003, back then still under the name Quick Step-Davitamon.

Evenepoel also took the maillot jaune from Ivan Romeo with the victory. The 21-year-old Spaniard, last year's U23 time trial world champion, lost almost one and a half minutes to the winner. Tadej Pogacar did not really get up to speed either. The Slovenian lost 49 seconds.

In the overall classification, Evenepoel leads four seconds ahead of the German Florian Lipowitz and nine seconds ahead of Romeo. Mathieu van der Poel and Vingegaard follow in second place, 14 and 16 seconds behind respectively. Pogacar is already 38 seconds behind.

The fifth stage over 183 km from Saint-Priest to Mâcon follows on Thursday. The 77th edition of the Tour of the Dauphiné will be decided on the last three stages in the Alps from Friday.
