The Swiss ski cross team misses out on advancing to the final in both the women's and men's events at the World Cup opener in Val Thorens. Sandra Näslund returns with a World Cup victory.
Fanny Smith got a little too low in a negative turn in the semi-finals and then couldn't find room to pull up into the gate. Instead of going into an infight with a competitor, she swung off. She did better in the small final and secured the heat win and 5th place in the final.
Talina Gantenbein, a finalist last year, was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Sixtine Cousin, who is fit again after a cruciate ligament rupture, and Saskja Lack also had to pack their bags after the first knockout round following a driving error.
Alex Fiva was responsible for the best Swiss result in the men's event at the start of his farewell season. The 39-year-old secured 7th place in the small final.
Ryan Regez and Jonas Lenherr were eliminated in qualifying and missed out on the top 32. Tobias Baur fell in the quarter-finals through no fault of his own. Roman Détraz, Gil Martin, twice the fastest Swiss in qualifying, and Lucas Richard were eliminated after the round of 16.
As if they had never been away: Sweden's Sandra Näslund, who had to miss almost two years of racing and had now set the fastest time twice in the training sessions, celebrated her comeback with her 40th World Cup victory. Marielle Thompson, the second great returnee, is present in Val Thorens, but did not start.
Italian Simone Deromedis, the 2023 World Champion, won the men's event.
