Fanny Smith is ski cross world champion for the second time. The Vaud native secured gold again in St. Moritz twelve years after winning her first title.
Fanny Smith had started as the favorite - all the more so because two of her biggest rivals were unable to compete. Olympic champion and three-time world champion Sandra Näslund from Sweden and Canadian Marielle Thompson, also an Olympic champion and world champion six years ago, had to withdraw due to injury.
With her double victory in the World Cup races in Craigleith in the Canadian province of Ontario, Fanny Smith had recently shown that she is in good form for the season's highlight in the Engadine.
With her second gold, Fanny Smith continued her medal hunt at the World Championships. She achieved the feat of winning gold for the seventh time in a row.
The two other Swiss women were eliminated early. Saskja Lack from Winterthur, who returned to the competition track after a three-month injury break, was eliminated in the quarter-finals, as was Talina Gantenbein from the Engadine.
