The Olympic flame for the Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d'Ampezzo, which begin on February 6, is burning. The flame was lit on Wednesday at the ancient site of Olympia.
However, due to the forecast rain, the traditional lighting ceremony using the sun's rays could not take place as usual. Instead, the organizers used the flame that had already been lit with sunlight on Monday during the dress rehearsal and kept since then.
The torch will now begin a nine-day journey through Greece before it is officially handed over to host nation Italy on December 4 at the Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens. The Italian leg of the torch relay will start in Rome on 6 December, covering 12,000 kilometers across the country and culminating in the opening ceremony on 6 February 2026 in Milan's San Siro Stadium.
