Franziska Matile-Dörig wins the first medal for Switzerland at the Cycling and Paracycling Road World Championships in Zurich. The rider from Appenzell takes gold in the time trial.
The former orienteer, who suffered a stiffened and deformed left foot after a road accident in April 2021, beat four competitors in her category.
Franziska Matile-Dörig recently won the bronze medal at the Paralympics. This time she turned the tables. The American Samantha Bosco, the winner in Paris, lost 21 seconds over the 29.9 km to the Zurich lake basin.
The 32-year-old Swiss rider managed the race very well. She initially lost 49 seconds on the climb, made up the deficit on the descent to the lake and still had enough energy on the flat stretch towards the finish to ultimately win the race with an hourly average of 37.6 km/h.
Franziska Matile-Dörig will have a second outing in Saturday's road race.
