Alex Marquez celebrates his first Grand Prix victory in MotoGP at the Spanish GP in Jerez. He thus takes over the world championship lead from brother Marc.
Alex Marquez had already taken twelve victories in the lower categories, but now he triumphed in his 94th MotoGP race for the first time in the "big ones". The last time the 29-year-old Catalan had won in Moto2 was six years ago in Brno.
After eight podium finishes and three 2nd places this year alone, Alex Marquez rode to his maiden victory in superior style. The way was paved by his brother Marc Marquez, three years older and six-time MotoGP World Champion. He crashed on the third lap, but despite a visibly damaged bike, he then started an impressive recovery race and pushed forward to 12th place. Nevertheless, Alex took over the championship lead from Marc with 140 to 139 points. Alex Marquez does not ride a factory but a customer Ducati.
Behind him, Fabio Quartararo, the 2021 World Champion, took advantage of his surprising pole position on the Yamaha to finish second and secure his first podium finish in almost two years.
