Richard Carapaz wins the 17th stage of the Tour de France in the SuperDévoluy mountain station at 1500 meters above sea level. Tadej Pogacar takes more seconds off Jonas Vingegaard.
Carapaz, the 31-year-old 2021 Olympic champion from Ecuador, rode solo over the 178 km from Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux to SuperDévoluy, 37 seconds ahead of Great Britain's Simon Yates and celebrated his first stage win at the Tour, a good two weeks after wearing the overall leader's yellow jersey for a day after stage 3. Spaniard Enric Mas finished third, just under a minute behind.
Just over seven minutes behind, Tadej Pogacar extended his overall lead over Jonas Vingegaard by a further two seconds with an attack shortly before the finish and Remco Evenepoel, who came third overall, made up twelve seconds on Vingegaard. Pogacar had already attacked Vingegaard for the first time on the penultimate climb and broke away in the meantime. However, last year's winner from Denmark was able to catch up again on the short flat section.
Pogacar now goes into the 18th stage with a lead of 3:11 minutes. On Thursday, the breakaways will again be in demand on the winding 180 km from Gap to Barcelonnette, which features five smaller climbs, before two more tough Alpine stages on Friday and Saturday. The Tour ends on Sunday with an individual time trial in Nice.
