Swiss national team coach Patrick Fischer has called up 24 players for the start of the Euro Hockey Tour from November 6-9 in Helsinki. Among them are ten World Championship finalists from last spring.
Next week's tournament in Finland is the first assessment of the current season, with the Olympic Games in Milan and the home World Championships as the highlights.
HCD provides a third of the players
For the first time, Nico Gross from HC Davos is in the national team line-up. The 25-year-old defenseman is one of eight players called up by the current Swiss league leaders. Due to the Spengler Cup in the week before the end of the year, no players from the record champions will be called up for the home tournament in Zurich in mid-December. Only Nicolas Baechler from the Swiss champions ZSC Lions will be present in Helsinki.
Three defensemen, six forwards plus HCD goalie Sandro Aeschlimann from last spring's World Championship team are in the line-up. National coach Patrick Fischer has nominated Reto Berra from Fribourg-Gottéron as the second goalkeeper. Leonardo Genoni, the MVP of the last World Championship, is missing.
The Swiss team travels to Finland next Tuesday. It will play its first game on Thursday against the tournament hosts. The games against Sweden and the Czech Republic will follow on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Fischer: "Want to continue the positive momentum"
"After the successful World Cup, we want to continue our positive momentum. The aim is to continue to grow as a team, to work consistently in every position and to prepare ourselves optimally for the Olympic Games and the home World Championships next year," Patrick Fischer is quoted as saying in a Swiss Ice Hockey communiqué. He will be assisted in Helsinki by Marcel Jenni and Lars Leuenberger (assistant coach Fribourg Gottéron).
