Swiss national team coach Patrick Fischer is relying on an experienced team for the home tournament in Zurich from December 11 to 14 as part of the Euro Hockey Tour. It is the Olympic dress rehearsal.

Fischer has called up five players who have played more than 100 times for the national team for the tournament in Zurich, where the Swiss will also play their games at the home World Championships next May: Roman Loeffel (157), Leonardo Genoni (145), Tristan Scherwey (117), Dean Kukan (116) and Gaëtan Haas (104).

No players from leader HCD

Grégory Hofmann and Christian Marti, who were also selected, have 98 international games each. However, Scherwey and Marti have been missing through injury recently - as have Denis Malgin and Fabian Heldner. Jonas Taibel is the least experienced member of the squad with seven appearances in national dress. There are no players from leaders Davos due to the Spengler Cup.

"Following the findings from the Euro Hockey Tour in Finland in November, we want to further develop the team in Zurich so that we can gain more and more clarity about the final Olympic team," Fischer was quoted as saying in a press release from the association. In Tampere, after the 3:1 opening win against the hosts, the Swiss suffered two clear defeats against Sweden (3:8) and the Czech Republic (0:4).

Sobering record as hosts

The Swiss are hosting a tournament for the fourth time in the Euro Hockey Tour. Their record is sobering with 1:8 wins. It's time to improve their record and gain confidence for the Olympic Games in Milan. Fischer will be assisted by Marcel Jenni and Rikard Franzén, as he was when he won the silver medal at the last World Championships.

The Swiss' first opponents at their home tournament will be the Swedes in a week's time on Thursday. Two days later, they will face the Czech Republic before concluding the tournament with a clash against Olympic champions Finland.
