Mathias Flückiger secures another podium finish at the end of the Mountain Bike World Cup in Les Gets. The 35-year-old Bernese rider finished second in the Olympic dress rehearsal in cross-country.
In the absence of Nino Schurter and world champion Thomas Pidcock, Flückiger was only beaten by Alan Hatherly in the French Alps. The South African pulled away in the fourth of eight laps and celebrated an unchallenged solo victory. At the finish he had a lead of more than one and a half minutes over Flückiger. It was his first elite cross-country triumph. Thanks to the victory, Hatherly also took the lead in the overall standings from Nino Schurter.
Mathias Flückiger doubled up three weeks before the Olympic Games and confirmed his good form. The rider from Oberaargau had already finished second in Crans-Montana the previous week, silencing the critics after previously mediocre results.
Another Swiss rider, Thomas Litscher, made it into the top 15 and thanks to this result he fulfilled Swiss Cycling's selection criteria for the World Championships in Andorra.
