Arsenal London scrape their way into the Champions League semi-finals against Sporting Lisbon. After a narrow 1-0 win in the first leg, a 0-0 draw at home in the quarter-final second leg is enough for the Gunners.
Arsenal FC have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the second time in a row. After the 1-0 win in Portugal, a 0-0 draw in the quarter-final second leg against Sporting Lisbon was enough for the Premier League leaders to advance to the top four once again. The Gunners will now face Atlético Madrid, who beat FC Barcelona.
Arsenal, who suddenly have to fear for their fourteenth championship in the club's history after a defeat against AFC Bournemouth, tried to secure their place early on with a goal of their own. Eberechi Eze was particularly impressive as a constant source of trouble, but there were no really compelling chances.
After ten minutes, the visitors then relieved the pressure for the first time and immediately created danger when Geny Catamo went down theatrically in the Gunners' penalty area. Piero Hincapie had hit the Sporting striker on the foot. However, French referee Francois Letexier immediately decided against a penalty kick and video referee Bastian Dankert also raised no objections.
Direct duel for the top of the league awaits
The game subsequently became rougher, with tackles dominating the scene. Shortly before the break, it was Catamo again who hit the left post with the best chance so far (43'). The game remained open in the second half, with both teams having chances to score. Arsenal's Leandro Trossard hit the post in the exciting final phase (84').
The first leg of the semi-final will take place in Madrid on April 29, with Arsenal then playing again a week later at the Emirates Stadium for a place in the final, which should be followed by a first-time win of the Henkelpot. The key match in the Premier League against Manchester City is already scheduled for Sunday.
