League leaders FC Arsenal experience a bad evening in the FA Cup. Manchester City advance to the semi-finals. Goalscorer Erling Haaland impresses against champions Liverpool FC.
Premier League leaders FC Arsenal were surprisingly eliminated in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup against a second division team. The Londoners lost 2-1 at Southampton FC.
Ross Stewart put Southampton ahead in the 35th minute. The favorites trailed for a long time before Viktor Gyökeres equalized after a pass from Kai Havertz (68'). However, Shea Charles (85) gave the home side the win in the end, with Bayern loanee Daniel Peretz in goal.
Earlier, Manchester City stormed into the semi-finals of the English Football Cup once again thanks to a treble from exceptional striker Erling Haaland. The Premier League runners-up won their quarter-final against champions Liverpool FC 4-0 at home, even without their successful coach Pep Guardiola on the sidelines.
Guardiola watched from the stands as Erling Haaland scored a brace in the first half: the exceptional striker converted a penalty in the 38th minute and scored with his head shortly before the break to make it 2-0 (45.+2). The Norwegian added his third goal for last year's finalists in the 57th minute to make it 4-0. Antoine Semenyo (50') had previously scored to make it 3-0. Mohamed Salah (64) missed a penalty for Liverpool.
The semi-finals will take place on April 25 and 26. Cup holders Crystal Palace had already been eliminated in the 3rd round by sixth division side FC Macclesfield.
