Video highlights Basel puts FCZ in their place and wins the classic 2:0

FC Basel defeated FC Zurich 2-0 in the 11th round of the Super League and moved up to second place with St. Gallen. The match-winner for the champions was Xherdan Shaqiri with two assists.

While the Zurich side have always scored in their last six games at St. Jakob-Park, the visitors' results crisis became apparent on Wednesday evening. FCZ also failed to score in their second game since the change of coach from Mitchell van der Gaag to Dennis Hediger. The result was the fourth defeat in a row - a negative run that has not been seen in this form for more than five years. It was a different story for the champions from Basel, who showed a reaction to Sunday's 5-1 defeat in Lausanne and won the classic in front of a home crowd for the first time since September 2021.

Two good moves from Xherdan Shaqiri were enough for Ludovic Magnin's team to secure three points. In the 13th minute, the 34-year-old played a great pin-pass to Bénie Traoré, who had no trouble getting past Yanick Brecher. Five minutes after the break, the former Swiss international crossed the ball to the second post following a short corner, where Ibrahim Salah unconventionally scored his first goal in the Super League with his back.

The fact that Zurich were still able to hope for a point for a long time was solely due to Basel's lack of chances and numerous good saves from Brecher. Shaqiri and Albian Ajeti were particularly culpable when it came to finishing. Both appeared alone in front of Brecher after hair-raising backpasses from Cheveyo Tsawa and Nelson Palacio respectively, but were unable to beat the FCZ goalkeeper.

In partly pouring rain, FCZ not only lacked vision in defense more than once, but also accuracy in finishing. Out of 14 attempts, Steven Zuber only managed to hit the post with around ten minutes remaining.
