Shaqiri ice-cold from the spot Basel win the top match against Lucerne and are the new leaders

FC Basel win the top match against FC Luzern and take over the lead in the table after the 22nd round. Xherdan Shaqiri converted two penalties scored by Kevin Carlos to secure a 2-1 victory.

Once again, Shaqiri took center stage since his return to FC Basel. The 125-time Swiss international has fantastic statistics. After 18 Super League games this season, he now has 8 goals and 11 assists. The last two goals in this list were not the most difficult, but they were decisive. In the 4th minute, Shaqiri responded to the early 0:1 with a Panenka penalty and after just under an hour, he converted the second penalty to make it 2:1 just as confidently as the first.

The surprising Luzern, who would have moved to the top of the table themselves with a win, did not disappoint. The visitors had their good moments with their purposeful play, but clearly less than the overall superior FCB. It was annoying for Mario Frick's team that Levin Winkler's 1:0 advantage after 34 seconds was quickly squandered. Lucerne defended poorly in the action that led to the first penalty, but were also unlucky that referee Dudic penalized the slight contact on Kevin Carlos.

The second foul on Kevin Carlos in the Lucerne penalty area was clearer, even though the Basel goal scorer fell spectacularly and rolled on the ground. The video referee interpreted the action correctly despite the Spaniard's display, and Dudic awarded the penalty after video review, which led to the decision. Luzern responded, but strong headers from Aleksandar Stankovic and Thibault Klidjé narrowly missed the target.

Basel are now two points ahead of Lugano and four ahead of Lucerne.
