Spectacular first leg in Manchester Bellingham scores Real's winner in stoppage time

Real Madrid win a spectacular first leg of their Champions League play-off against Manchester City 3:2 away from home. The turning point for the Whites comes just before the end.

Defending champions Real Madrid are through to the last 16 after a late win in the Champions League play-off at Manchester City. Jude Bellingham scored in stoppage time to give Pep Guardiola's team a 3-2 win. Two goals from superstar Erling Haaland were not enough for City. The second leg will be decided next Wednesday (21:00, live on blue Sport) at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid.

Even though Real Madrid had to do without numerous defensive players, the Spaniards were clearly better at the start. Kylian Mbappé (11th minute) and, in particular, Ferland Mendy (12th minute) missed the best opportunities. In contrast, the hosts made the most of their first chance: Haaland scored to make it 1:0 (19').

Real equalize twice

However, the goal did not give ManCity the confidence they needed. Real attacker Vinicius Junior hit the crossbar six minutes later. Mbappé deservedly equalized after the break with a stroke of luck: the Frenchman put the ball into the City goal with his shin after a cross from Dani Ceballos (60').

Mbappé and Jude Bellingham both missed the 2:1 shortly afterwards, but Haaland then gave City the lead again with a penalty (80'). Ex-City professional Brahim Diaz equalized for Real to make it 2:2 (86'), then Bellingham provided the happy ending for the Spaniards.
