Real win the Madrid city derby in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. The "royals" beat Atlético 2:1 at home, while Arsenal celebrated a 7:1 gala in Eindhoven.
The game at the Bernabéu was characterized by beautiful goals. After strikes from Rodrygo and Julian Alvarez in the first half, it was Brahim Diaz who scored the winner in the 55th minute. The Moroccan danced his way through the penalty area and confidently slotted the ball into the far corner. After three consecutive 1:1 draws, the Derbi madrileño was once again won.
For Real, it was also a strong reaction to last weekend's setback, when the record champions lost 2-1 at Betis Sevilla and dropped to third place in the table behind Atlético. However, the narrow lead still leaves everything open for the second leg.
Kobel's BVB miss out on first-leg win against Lille
Nothing has been decided yet in the clash between Borussia Dortmund and Lille. The Germans missed out on a good starting position in the home game and had to settle for a 1-1 draw. After Karim Adeyemi scored the opening goal, Dortmund retreated further and further in the second half.
The visitors from France punished this in the person of Hakon Arnar Haraldsson. The 21-year-old Icelander eluded his defenders and beat Swiss national goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a well-placed shot.
English teams impress
The surprise team from Bruges suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat against Aston Villa. In an even second half, an own goal made the difference. In the 82nd minute, Brandon Mechele tried to clear a cross and deflected the ball into his own net. Shortly after this mishap, Christos Tzolis acted naively in his own penalty area and hit an opponent on the leg. Villa's Marco Asensio converted the resulting penalty with ease. Brugge had won the clash in the league phase at the same venue in November 1:0.
The Belgians had shown a strong reaction to going behind early in the game (3rd minute) and equalized in the 12th minute. The starting point was Swiss international Ardon Jashari, who had set up Tzolis with a long ball. Bruges then missed good opportunities to score further goals. As a result, the Belgian champions' hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals have receded into the distance.
Arsenal with one foot in the quarter-finals after a resounding victory
The situation is even worse for the Dutch champions: PSV Eindhoven went down 7-1 at home to Arsenal. Immediately after Eindhoven's Ismael Saibari had hit the crossbar from close range, Dutchman Jurriën Timber, who trained at Ajax Amsterdam, gave the visitors the lead. The Londoners then played themselves into a frenzy. PSV's only goal came from a penalty shortly before the break.
The second leg will take place next week on Wednesday, March 12.
