Steffen free kick from mega distance Decimated Luganesi shock St.Gallen in stoppage time

FC St.Gallen have to settle for a point in the chasing duel against Lugano. The team from eastern Switzerland conceded 1:1 in stoppage time while outnumbered.

FC St.Gallen were punished for playing too passively in the second half in a match that could not take place on Saturday due to snowfall. Although the Ticino side were down to ten players from the 64th minute and the yellow card against Daniel Dos Santos, they created their best chances to score in the final half hour.

St.Gallen were lucky when substitute 19-year-old Swede Elias Pihlström hit the crossbar shortly after being sent off. Not so in stoppage time, when a free kick from Renato Steffen flew past everyone into the goal from long range. FCSG goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi was unable to deflect the ball decisively.

St.Gallen's strong first half was thus only half rewarded. Christian Witzig had given the hosts the lead with his 16th goal of the season in the opening quarter of an hour.

Enrico Maassen's team, who remain the clear frontrunners behind leaders Thun with a five-point lead, have been on a strange run this year: In the nine games so far in 2026, they have always alternated between a draw and a win.
