Ex-Basel player Veiga sees red Eighth league win in a row: leaders Barça win against Villarreal

FC Barcelona secure their eighth win in a row in La Liga against Villarreal and extend their lead over Real Madrid to four points.

FC Barcelona have maintained their four-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga table. In the top match at FC Villarreal, coach Hansi Flick's team secured a 2-0 win, which the Catalans had to fight for, especially in the first half. The hosts were always dangerous in front of the Barça goal, but were unable to take advantage of even the best chances.

Raphinha scored for the visitors with a penalty in the 12th minute and Lamine Yamal in the 63rd minute. Barcelona were outnumbered from the 39th minute onwards after Villarreal's Renato Vega committed a nasty foul on Yamal on the halfway line and was rightly shown the red card.

Joan Garcia returned in goal for Barça after German international keeper Marc-André ter Stegen had been given a chance in the cup during the week. Ter Stegen made his first appearance for Barcelona since May 18 in the laborious 2-0 win at third-division side CD Guadalajara after recovering from a back injury. However, coach Flick had made it clear on several occasions that Garcia would remain his regular keeper. This means that the future of ex-Gladbach player ter Stegen is still uncertain. He needs match practice in order to be the national team's number one goalkeeper at next summer's World Cup (June 11 to July 19).
