The 2002 world champion's leg was actually only examined, but then the doctors discovered further problems. According to the former left-back, he is doing well after the operation.

According to a media report, former football world champion Roberto Carlos has undergone heart surgery in his native Brazil. An examination of his leg revealed heart problems, reported the Spanish sports newspaper "AS". The doctors then inserted a catheter into the 52-year-old's heart.

"I'm fine now," said the former defender. He will now remain in hospital for two more days for observation.

Roberto Carlos was considered the best left-back in the world during his playing days. He won the Champions League three times with Real Madrid. In 2002, he won the World Cup title with the Brazilian national team in the final against Germany. He is currently an ambassador for top Spanish club Real Madrid.
