Peter Zeidler has made a false start as the new coach of VfL Bochum. The team with Swiss Noah Loosli became the first Bundesliga club to be eliminated in the first round of the German Cup.
Bochum lost 0:1 at second-division side Regensburg. Loosli was in the starting eleven for Zeidler's first competitive match at the Bundesliga club, which had been relegated by a whisker in the previous season, and had to watch as the lower-ranked opponents scored the decisive goal in the 70th minute from a corner.
The twelve other Bundesliga teams that had already been involved in the competition survived the potential stumbling block at the start of the season unscathed. Augsburg, Ruben Vargas' (still) team, came from behind to beat fourth-division side Viktoria Berlin 4:1 on Sunday.
Elvis Rexhbecaj, new signing Samuel Essende and, in the closing stages, substitute Niklas Dorsch and Phillip Tietz scored the goals for Augsburg, who had fallen behind in the 4th minute. Vargas, who is seeking a transfer, was substituted in the 79th minute and crossed in the 87th minute to make it 3-1.
Augsburg thus avoided a first-round defeat like the one in Unterhaching in the previous season. Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart, Eintracht Frankfurt, Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg have not yet played.
