- YB player Joël Monteiro overslept a team meeting before the game against St. Gallen, which causes astonishment in the blue Sport studio.
- Ex-Nati stars Alex Frei and Michi Lang see the lack of discipline as a symbol of the current crisis at YB.
Young Boys are currently experiencing troubled times. Inevitably, coach Giorgio Contini is also coming under scrutiny. For Alex Frei, however, the focus should be on other issues.
For example, the personnel issue of Joël Monteiro. The winger has clearly fallen short of expectations in the championship so far and has failed to score a single goal in nine league games. A poor record for a player of his talent.
What's more, Monteiro is apparently also making a negative impression off the pitch, as Frei explains in the blue Sport studio. "A Swiss international is late for the meeting at 11 o'clock in the morning," he says, astonished by the 26-year-old's indiscipline before the important match against St. Gallen last week.
"You have to stand in a traffic jam for eight hours. But he overslept," Frei scoffs. For the Nati record goalscorer, it's clear: "That's a reflection of the current state of YB".
"I would have left him at home"
When Michi Lang is asked how he would handle the situation, Frei is particularly curious. After all, FC Basel also had a case like this - Frei was a coach and Lang was a player.
"I'm not a fan of unpunctuality," says Lang. There could be reasons for this, says the Wil sports manager: "You're stuck in a traffic jam or miss the train. At 11 o'clock on a Sunday morning, it's rather difficult to make that excuse," he explains.
Lang continues: "It's simply not a good sign, especially in this situation. I would have left him at home." Lang would also have taken a different approach to Contini, who brought Monteiro on as a substitute against FCSG in the 65th minute.
"What I wouldn't have done would have been to substitute him. Either be really consistent or forgive him across the board and let him go from the start if you have the feeling he'll get you the win," explained the 34-year-old. However, his criticism is aimed at Monteiro, who has made five appearances for the national team so far but was not called up by coach Murat Yakin. "It's primarily just really bad from the player," emphasizes Lang.
Monteiro, who extended his contract with Young Boys, which expires at the end of September, by one year until the summer of 2027, can make amends against FC Zurich. You can find out who wins the clash between the two struggling clubs live on blue Sport at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
