The burden of the first leg was too heavy for Borussia Dortmund, but BVB bid farewell to the Champions League with an exclamation mark. The 3:1 win against Barça gives them strength for the final spurt in the league.
Miracle missed, morale gained for the Bundesliga final spurt: Last year's finalists Borussia Dortmund bowed out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals with their heads held high. In the second leg on Tuesday, BVB inflicted their first defeat of the year on Hans Flick's FC Barcelona with a 3:1 (1:0) thanks to an unleashed Serhou Guirassy. However, coach Niko Kovac's side were unable to make up for the devastating 4-0 defeat in the first leg a week ago.
A Guirassy treble (11th minute, penalty/49th/76th) was not enough to progress. Guirassy scored his eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth goals in the current competition - a club record. Even Erling Haaland and current Barça goalscorer Robert Lewandowski had not managed this mark.
An own goal by Ramy Bensebaini (54') took the momentum out of Dortmund's second-half assault. Despite their first ever defeat to BVB, Barcelona will now face FC Bayern or Inter Milan in the semi-finals.
The final five games of the season in the Bundesliga will show whether Dortmund will now have to wait at least 17 months for festive days like this one on Tuesday in the European premier class. On Easter Sunday, the eighth-placed team will continue their race to catch up against direct rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Raphinha on the verge of a historic mark
Barça star Raphinha has already been directly involved in 19 goals in 11 appearances this Champions League season (12 goals, 7 assists). With just one more goal, he would become only the third player ever to reach the 20-goal mark in a single Champions League season - after Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski.

Dortmund and the (lack of) belief in a miracle
Dortmund's starting position ahead of the second leg against Barcelona seems pretty hopeless. Swiss international goalkeeper Gregor Kobel's team no longer seem to believe in themselves. "That would probably be the biggest football miracle in the history of Borussia Dortmund," said BVB sports director Lars Ricken on Monday.
