  • Andy Egli was considered a tough and ambitious defender who was part of the legendary "Abbruch GmbH" of the Swiss national team.
  • He himself admits that he was often difficult during his career and sees this as part of his success.
  • Despite his toughness, Egli always made a point of not deliberately injuring opponents and respected their health.

Defenders are generally regarded as tough guys. GC legend Andy Egli was one of them during his career. Together with Roger Wehrli, Heinz Lüdi and Charly In-Albon, the 68-year-old formed the so-called "Abbruch GmbH" in the national team's defense under coach Paul Wolfisberg in the 1980s. "I saw this nickname as a compliment," says Egli in the World Cup talk "Helden für immer". He was always aware that his sometimes dogged nature and ambition did not go down well everywhere.

"I was very demanding towards my teammates"

"I used to be an asshole a lot, I probably only became a good person after my active career," Egli once told SRF in an interview. He still stands by this statement today, saying: "If I hadn't been an asshole, I probably wouldn't have made it this far." His footballing talent was manageable, says Egli modestly.

His mentality set him apart during his career. "The bite and the absolute determination to ensure that the team performance was as good as possible at all times was what drove me every day," he says. But the five-time Swiss champion didn't just expect top performance from himself: "I was also very demanding of my teammates." And he sometimes overdid it.

But even though Egli liked to get down to business, he always had respect for the health of his opponents. "I never made a bad tackle just on the opponent's bones."
