Europa League Jaquez and Stuttgart book their place in the last 16 despite defeat against Celtic

VfB Stuttgart fell behind very early against Celtic Glasgow. It was only thanks to their comfortable lead from the first leg that the Swabians did not have to worry too much.

VfB Stuttgart have advanced to the last 16 of the Europa League despite a defeat. After the 4:1 victory in the first leg at Celtic Glasgow, the Swabian Bundesliga club suffered a 0:1 defeat at home to the Scots. Luca Jaquez was in the starting line-up and was substituted after 73 minutes.

The hosts fell behind after just 30 seconds through Luke McCowan. VfB then took control of the game in the play-off match, but struggled for a long time. The pressure increased with the substitution of director Angelo Stiller. A goal by Deniz Undav (75th minute) was taken back after video evidence.

Coach Sebastian Hoeness' team will continue their European Cup journey on March 12 and 19 against a Portuguese team. This Friday, the draw will decide whether Stuttgart will face Sporting Braga or FC Porto; both had qualified directly for the round of 16.
