The accident occurred at around 00:30 on Thursday on the A-52 highway near the municipality of Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora, in north-western Spain.

According to several media reports, a burst tire during an overtaking manoeuvre caused Jota's car to leave the road and burn to the ground. A video from a local newspaper has appeared on social media showing the burnt-down car on the side of the road.

There is great sympathy following the death of the ex-football star. Many sports celebrities such as Cristiano Ronaldo and LeBron James expressed their condolences on their channels. Many words are also addressed directly to Rute, Diogo Jota's wife.

The two were a couple for more than ten years. They tied the knot 11 days ago, on June 22, 2025. They shared pictures and videos of their wedding on their profiles. They are beaming at the camera with their three children, aged four, two and less than a year. 11 days later, Rute lost her husband and the children lost their father.

The 28-year-old's last Instagram post, published just a few hours before the tragic accident, is heartbreaking. It is footage of her wedding. Underneath, Jota writes: "A day we will never forget."
