Xabi Alonso celebrates Real Madrid's first competitive win of the season against Osasuna. Kylian Mbappé is responsible for the only goal of the evening with a penalty.

Star striker Kylian Mbappé saved Xabi Alonso from disappointment on his league debut as Real Madrid coach. The French international scored the only goal in the 1:0 (0:0) win for the Whites against CA Osasuna in the 51st minute from the penalty spot. Mbappé himself had previously been fouled by Juan Cruz in the penalty area. In stoppage time, Osasuna's Abel Bretones (90.+4) was shown red for rough play.

Up until Mbappé's goal, Real were overwhelmingly superior, but not very compelling. The short preparation time of just under two weeks due to their participation in the Club World Cup in the summer was clearly noticeable.

Nevertheless, Alonso should be satisfied with the three points in his first league game as Real coach. The ex-Madrid pro had already emphasized during his introduction that it would take time before he could implement his idea of successful and attractive football like in Leverkusen.
