Xhaka and Co. do not benefit Leverkusen and Bayern Munich slip up - Dortmund also lose

Bayer Leverkusen lost 2-0 to Werder Bremen, meaning the champions failed to make up points on leaders Bayern Munich, who lost 3-2 to Bochum.

The Bundesliga results from Saturday afternoon

  • Leverkusen - Werder Bremen 0:2
  • Dortmund - Augsburg 0:1
  • Bayern Munich - Bochum 2:3
  • Kiel - Stuttgart 2:2
  • Wolfsburg - St. Pauli 1:1
  • Freiburg - Leipzig 0:0

The top duo in the Bundesliga have failed to win their long-distance duel. Three days before the second leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League, both leaders FC Bayern Munich and champions Bayer Leverkusen lost. Borussia Dortmund also suffered a setback with a home defeat against Augsburg.

FC Bayern Munich - VfL Bochum 2:3 (2:1)

FC Bayern rotates and loses outnumbered. Only Leon Goretzka was back in the starting eleven for the 125th club anniversary celebrations and three days after the 3-0 Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen. Nevertheless, Raphaël Guerreiro put the league leaders 2-0 ahead with a brace in the 14th and 28th minutes. In the absence of penalty taker Harry Kane, Serge Gnabry hit the post with a foul kick. Jakov Medic (31) scored the equalizer for the relegation-threatened Bochum side. Shortly before the break, Bayern's Joao Palinha was sent off with a red card for a foul. And then the turning point after the break: Ibrahima Sissoko (51) and Matus Bero (71) secured Bochum's coup in the relegation battle and shocked Bayern.

Bayer Leverkusen - SV Werder Bremen 0:2 (0:1)

Leverkusen also made seven changes to their starting line-up three days before the second leg of the round of 16 tie against Bayern. However, this initially had no positive effect: Bremen, who had been in crisis recently, took an early lead through Romano Schmid (7'), while a second Werder goal by Milos Veljkovic (30') was conceded by the video assistant for offside. Exceptional player Florian Wirtz came on for the second half, but had to leave the pitch injured after a foul. Leverkusen pressed for the equalizer - but to no avail. The final goal was scored by Justin Njinmah (90.+4) for Werder.

Borussia Dortmund - FC Augsburg 0:1 (0:1)

BVB are still searching for consistency. After two wins in the Bundesliga and a 1-1 draw against OSC Lille in the Champions League, coach Niko Kovac's team suffered another setback in their battle to qualify for the top flight again. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (23) scored the winner for Augsburg in Dortmund. The supposed equalizer by the recently controversial Julian Brandt was subsequently disallowed for offside, as was the second goal for the visitors through an own goal by Salih Öczan.

VfL Wolfsburg - FC St. Pauli 1:1 (0:1)

VfL Wolfsburg avoided a home defeat and can still hope to play in the European Cup next season. Mohammed Amoura (70) saved the draw for the Lower Saxony side. Siebe van der Heyden (38) had put the relegation-threatened FC St. Pauli ahead in the first half.

Holstein Kiel - VfB Stuttgart 2:2 (1:1)

Like St. Pauli, Holstein Kiel also won an important point to stay in the league. Steven Skrzybski (30/46) scored a brace to put Kiel ahead after Jamie Leweling (15) had made it 0-1 against Stuttgart, who were short-handed for a long time. After Leonidas Stergiou was shown red for a foul (52'), Ermedin Demirovic (55') equalized for VfB.

SC Freiburg - RB Leipzig 0:0 (0:0)

RB Leipzig and its heavily criticized coach Marco Rose missed out on the hoped-for escape. The Saxons had to settle for a 0-0 draw at SC Freiburg, which is unlikely to end the discussions surrounding the 48-year-old Rose. In the top match of the Bundesliga, the visitors' performance was not enough to secure the desired second win of the second half of the season. The duel had been seen as a possible endgame for Rose.

Leipzig remain in sixth place in the table, two points behind the Breisgauers (5th), and also failed to make a mark in the battle for the Champions League places. His Freiburg coach colleague Julian Schuster, on the other hand, has been unbeaten with the South Baden side for six games and can increasingly dream of the European Cup. SC did not concede a goal for the sixth time - setting two club records: for the team and for goalkeeper Noah Atubolu himself.
