Liverpool make short work of Galatasaray in the second leg and advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a 4:0 victory. Atlético, Bayern and Barcelona are also among the last eight.
Liverpool were the second of six English teams to make it through to the last eight. At Anfield Road, the English champions overturned the 1-0 deficit from the first leg against Galatasaray Istanbul with a convincing 4-0 win. Dominik Szoboszlai made it 1-0 in the 25th minute to quickly tie the game.
After that, the hosts struggled to convert their chances. Mohamed Salah failed to score from the penalty spot shortly before the break, before Hugo Ekitiké, Ryan Gravenberch and Salah scored three goals between the 52nd and 62nd minutes to seal the quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain. The two teams had faced each other in the round of 16 last year. PSG had secured their progress in a penalty shoot-out.
Barça teach Newcastle a lesson
Barcelona booked their quarter-final ticket just as impressively as Liverpool FC. The Spaniards outclassed Newcastle United 7:2 at home in the Camp Nou eight days after the fortunate 1:1 draw and thus celebrated one of their highest victories in the European Cup.
Without the still-injured Swiss defender Fabian Schär, Newcastle were able to draw level for three quarters of the duel with Barcelona. The English side equalized two Barcelona leads in the second leg through Anthony Elanga (15th and 28th) before the hosts pulled away irresistibly.
Lamine Yamal scored a penalty shortly before the break to make it 3-2, but Fermin Lopez (51) and Robert Lewandowski twice (56 and 61) took the sting out of what had been a thrilling and spectacular match in the first half by scoring three goals in the space of ten minutes. The second double scorer alongside Lewandowski was Raphinha, who scored the first goal in the 6th minute and the last in the 72nd minute. In the quarter-finals, Barça will face Atlético Madrid, who easily defended their 5-2 first-leg victory at Tottenham.
Kane reaches 50 goals
In Munich, the question of FC Bayern's progression was no longer an issue after the 6:1 win at Atalanta Bergamo. It was more interesting to know whether top striker Harry Kane, who had suffered an injury in the first leg, would reach the 50 Champions League goals that evening in his 66th appearance in the top flight.
Indeed, the Englishman scored the two goals needed for the 4:1 home win. The other scorers were Lennart Karl and Luis Diaz. The German champions continue their campaign in the first half of April with the quarter-final against Real Madrid.
