Liverpool FC confirmed on Tuesday evening that Mohamed Salah will leave the club in the summer. Although the departure does not come as a complete surprise, it is a real bombshell.
Last year, Salah extended his contract with the Reds until 2027. This was after he was already set to leave at the end of 2024. Waiting for a contract offer, he expressed his disappointment with Liverpool FC at the time and said: "I'm probably more likely to leave than stay." There have also been moments this season when the tablecloth seemed to be cut in two for good. Salah was even dropped from the squad at one point, which the Egyptian did not like at all.
Recently, however, Salah was back in the starting line-up and showed his class on several occasions, particularly in the second leg of the round of 16 against Galatasaray Istanbul. On the way to the quarter-finals, he scored a dream goal and set up another. In doing so, he also made up for his miserably missed penalty in the first half.
It is not easy for him to say goodbye, says Salah, because Liverpool is "more than just a football club" for him. The 33-year-old Egyptian has won pretty much everything there is to win with the Reds. "I would like to thank everyone who has been part of this club during my time, especially my former and current team-mates and the fans," says Salah. He continued: "I'm lost for words - the support you gave me during the best times of my career and the fact that you stuck by me during the most difficult times is something I will never forget and will always carry in my heart."
Winning everything there is to win
Salah will leave the club after nine years in which he has achieved incredible things. He is not only Liverpool's record goalscorer in the Premier League era, but also one of the best in the league overall. Only Alan Shearer (260), Harry Kane (213) and Wayne Rooney (208) have scored more times than Salah (191). However, the latter has not only scored himself, but also contributed 93 assists.
Salah has played a total of 435 games for Liverpool in all competitions to date, scoring an incredible 255 goals and providing 122 assists. He has never been sent off in all his years at Liverpool.
Salah is undoubtedly one of the greatest players in the club's history. The former Basel striker, who also won African Footballer of the Year twice, won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2019 and became English champion in 2020 and 2025. He also triumphed in various cup competitions.
Salah will hardly be able to say goodbye in the summer with another league title, as the gap is too big. But anything is still possible in the Champions League.
