Liverpool FC are on the verge of winning the championship. After a narrow victory, the Reds can clinch the title on Sunday - or on the sofa on Wednesday.
Liverpool FC are on the verge of winning the English football championship. Coach Arne Slot's team won the Premier League by a narrow but deserved 1:0 (0:0) at Leicester City. The decisive goal was scored by Trent Alexander-Arnold in the 76th minute. While the Reds are just one win away from the title, Leicester have already been relegated after their 23rd defeat of the season.
Liverpool fail to take their chances for a long time
In a game that the visitors dominated for long stretches, Liverpool initially missed many good chances. Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota, among others, only hit the aluminum within a few seconds before Alexander-Arnold hammered the ball into the goal from an acute angle. The England international is rumored to be on the verge of a move to Real Madrid.
Leicester, who were unable to halt their downward trend under coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, were rarely effective in attack, but did have chances. A goal by Conor Coady was disallowed in the 66th minute due to a foul on Liverpool keeper Alisson. Facundo Buonanotte missed the equalizer in the 83rd minute and shot past the goal.
13 points ahead of Arsenal FC
Earlier in the day, second-placed Arsenal had won 4-0 (2-0) at newly promoted Ipswich Town to delay Liverpool's title triumph. The Gunners are 13 points behind after 33 games. The Reds could clinch the title next Sunday with a home win against Tottenham Hotspur - or with a draw if Arsenal only manage a draw against Crystal Palace on Wednesday. Should the Londoners lose their home game, Liverpool would be champions through no fault of their own.
For 18th-placed Ipswich, on the other hand, direct relegation is as good as certain. With five games remaining, Ipswich are 15 points behind a non-relegation place and have a goal difference 20 goals worse than 17th-placed West Ham United.
