FC Basel must relinquish top spot in the table after a 1-1 draw in Lucerne. A strong half is not enough for three points.
One dominated half, one point each. A level playing field in the top match in Lucerne between the two statistically best attacks in the Super League. In the first 45 minutes, FC Basel were better, more compelling in their actions, while Lucerne were almost exclusively conspicuous for their misplaced passes. The 0:1 in the 41st minute was representative of what had been seen: Stefan Knezevic missed the ball in his own penalty area and Bénie Traoré shot in spectacularly. It was his seventh goal of the season.
Lucerne only woke up after the break, when Basel could no longer count on the ideas of Xherdan Shaqiri. Basel's top scorer was substituted as a precautionary measure due to muscular problems. FCB goalkeeper Marwin Hitz came to the fore in the second 45 minutes, saving several times before the Baslers were forced to concede an equalizer in the 78th minute.
The fact that Knezevic was the goalscorer shows just how much morale there is in this young Lucerne team. The defender, who had not scored since December 2021, gained possession in the opposition penalty area after his team-mates had won a series of tackles and scored with a shot from a turn to make it 1-1. It was FCL's 20th goal in the final quarter of an hour.
After the draw, FC Basel remain two points ahead of Luzern. Next weekend they will play at home against Young Boys, who are only six points behind FCB.
