Fifth win in a row Lugano flexes its muscles against bottom club Winterthur

FC Lugano's race to catch up in the Super League continues unabated. In the 4:1 home win against bottom-of-the-table Winterthur, the game was practically decided in the first half.

Anto Grgic converted a free kick directly from around 20 meters out after 13 minutes. Even though Renato Steffen missed the 2:0 from the best position eight minutes later, the early lead set the course for an unchallenged home victory against his favorite opponent of recent years. Kevin Behrens and Mattia Zanotti made it 3:0 early on in the first half after excellent work from Daniel Dos Santos.

This was the sixth time in a row that Winterthur failed to score against Lugano, and they also conceded goals 53 to 55 in the championship. The visitors were unable to do more than make it 1:3 through Adrian Hunziker (67th minute), who also had Winterthur's first good opportunity on his feet in the first half, when Lugano shifted down a gear. Hadj Mahmoud then restored the three-goal difference.

Coach Patrick Rahmen once again had more options when choosing his players than he did recently. Compared to the 2-0 defeat in Sion ten days ago, he changed almost all of his personnel. In the absence of Luca Zuffi, who was ill, only Pajtim Kasami and Andrin Hunziker remained in the Winterthur starting eleven alongside goalkeeper Stefanos Kapino.

For Lugano, the absence of the suspended Antonios Papadopoulos in central defense was of no consequence. Damian Kelvin deputized for Papadopoulos alongside Hannes Delcroix and played his part in Lugano's fifth win in a row.
