Hotly contested match Lugano secures its place in the Championship Group - St.Gallen with its back to the wall

FC St. Gallen missed out on the victory they were aiming for in Lugano. The two teams drew 1-1, with the Ticino side qualifying for the Championship Group.

It took around an hour for the game in Lugano, which until then had been characterized by many duels, to pick up speed. First Martim Marques put the home team ahead with a header. After a beautiful cross from Renato Steffen, the 21-year-old Portuguese scored his first league goal of the season.

At this stage, the home team finally seemed to have the game under control. But the visitors came back once more. After a blocked shot, the ball ended up with Willem Geubbels, who scored with a well-placed shot to make it 1:1. An equalizer that was not on the cards.

Both sides then made certain efforts to score the winning goal. However, the teams were usually too hesitant in front of goal. Geubbels came closest to scoring again when his header in the 91st minute failed to find the net.

While Lugano secured a place in the top six for themselves and FC Luzern with the point, St. Gallen can only have faint hopes of making it into the championship round. On Easter Monday, there will be a three-way battle with Zurich and Lausanne-Sport.
