- Matheus Nunes scores the decisive goal in the 4th minute of stoppage time.
- Manuel Akanji makes a mini-appearance after the decisive goal - his second since his return.
Manchester City secured valuable points at the very last minute on their way to the Champions League. Thanks to Matheus Nunes, coach Pep Guardiola's team narrowly won the direct duel with Aston Villa 2:1 (1:1) and thus jumped to third place in the Premier League. The Portuguese Nunes scored the acclaimed winning goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Bernardo Silva (7th) had taken the lead early on, only for England international Marcus Rashford (18th/foul penalty) to counter. City (61 points) and Villa (57) are right in the thick of the race for the Champions League. Thanks to a strong international season, the Premier League has five guaranteed places in Europe's most prestigious club competition.
Marmoush's goal doesn't count
Liverpool (79) are a certainty, and Arsenal (66) are also hard to dislodge. Behind them, Nottingham (60), Newcastle United (59) and Chelsea FC (57) are also competing with the two Champions League contenders, who fought it out at the Ethiad Stadium on Tuesday.
City and Villa have played one more game than any of their opponents since that evening. Former Frankfurt player Omar Marmoush's supposed winning goal for the hosts (80') was disallowed for offside. But Nunes saved the evening for Guardiola and Co.
