Victory in the top match against Arsenal Man City relaunch the title race thanks to Haaland

Erling Haaland scores to give Manchester City a 2-1 win in the top-of-the-table clash against Arsenal. The Citizens can now catch up with the leaders from London.

Arsenal FC are in danger of losing their first English football championship in 22 years. The flagging league leaders lost the top match at Manchester City 2:1 (1:1). The Londoners are now only three points ahead of their rivals. However, Man City have played one game less and could soon overtake them.

Coach Pep Guardiola's hosts took the lead after just a quarter of an hour through the powerful Rayan Cherki in a match that was intense from the outset at the Etihad Stadium. The Frenchman beat several opponents in the penalty area and scored into the far corner.

Donnarumma's blunder

But the lead lasted less than two minutes, as Havertz (18) took advantage of a serious mistake by City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma shortly afterwards. The German international blocked the Italian's attempted clearance and fired the ball straight into the net. An open exchange of blows then developed.

After the break, Man City increasingly became the dominant team. Arsenal also had top-class chances to take the lead, but Eberechi Eze and Gabriel both hit the post. Man City increased the pressure and were rewarded with a goal from Erling Haaland (65), who reacted quickest in a confusing situation in the penalty area.

After 33 games, Arsenal lead the table with 70 points, but probably not for long. Manchester City play their catch-up game at Burnley FC next Wednesday. A win there would see City draw level on points, but thanks to their superior goal difference, they would be the new leaders.
