Last season, all four "Clásicos" went to Barcelona. Now Real Madrid have once again won the prestigious clash. With a 2:1 victory, the Whites defended their lead in the LaLiga table.
Real Madrid have overtaken defending champions FC Barcelona in the Spanish championship for the time being. Xabi Alonso's side won the Clásico 2:1 at home against their arch-rivals. After ten matchdays, the record champions are now five points ahead of Hansi Flick's team, who was not allowed to stand on the touchline due to suspension.
Kylian Mbappé (22') and Jude Bellingham (43') scored for the home side in the first half, with Fermín López (38') equalizing in between. Barcelona's Pedri was shown a yellow card just before the end, after which several players clashed in front of the reserve benches. After the final whistle, several professionals also briefly scuffled with each other on the pitch.
Turbulent opening phase and two lucky breaks for Barcelona
The visitors were coached by assistant coach Marcus Sorg at the Bernabéu Stadium after Flick had been red-carded and suspended for complaining in the late win against FC Girona the day before. In the previous season, the double winners had won all four duels with their arch-rivals from Madrid.
There was the first upset after just two minutes: the referee initially awarded Real a penalty after Lamine Yamal's tackle on Vinicius Jr. but, after video evidence, ruled a foul on the Madrid striker. Barcelona were lucky again when Mbappé scored from 22 meters in the twelfth minute, but the beautiful goal was disallowed for offside.
Mbappé scores and misses a penalty
The French star striker then scored again after a perfect pass from Bellingham, and this time the goal counted as 1:0. It was Mbappé's eleventh goal of the season in the league. After Fermín López's somewhat surprising equalizer, which Flick celebrated in a booth under the stadium roof, Bellingham responded immediately from close range.
Mbappé could have made it 3-1 in the 52nd minute with a penalty, but goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny made a brilliant save. Barcelona then pressed for an equalizer, but without the injured goalscorer Robert Lewandowski, they lacked the most important outlet in the penalty area. As a result, Real held on for a deserved victory without any major problems.
